A Real On-Ramp, Not a Marketing Pitch
One of the most common things I hear from CS and IT students is that cloud certification feels out of reach — not because the material is too hard, but because the cost adds up fast. A Skill Builder subscription runs $449 a year. Certification exams are $100 each. That is a real barrier when you are a student.
AWS just removed it.
AWS Builder Center recently launched Student Rewards — a program that gives verified university students access to free Skill Builder Premium, AWS Credits, and an AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher as they learn and participate in the Builder Center community.
What the Program Offers
According to the official announcement, verified students who complete their Builder Center profile unlock 12 months of AWS Skill Builder Premium — that is 900+ courses, hands-on labs, certification exam prep, and Cloud Quest game-based learning. The same subscription that normally costs $449 per year.
From there, the program is badge-driven. As you engage on Builder Center — publishing articles, commenting, participating — you earn badges that unlock additional rewards:
- 7 badges — $10 in AWS Credits
- 14 badges — $20 in AWS Credits
- 21 badges — An AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher ($100 value)
The total commitment from AWS across this initiative is framed as over $500 in resources for students during this back-to-school season.
Why This Is Significant
AWS certification is the most recognized credential in cloud computing. The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or AWS Certified AI Practitioner are the standard entry points — recognized by every major tech firm, consultancy, and enterprise IT team globally.
The Student Rewards program lowers the barrier to both the preparation and the exam itself. For a student who is already building on AWS or curious about cloud, there is no cost reason not to engage with this.
I have been in this space long enough to know that the students who start getting their hands into real cloud environments early — even before graduation — are the ones who enter the job market with a meaningful edge. This program is exactly the kind of structured on-ramp that accelerates that.
How to Get Started
I am pointing you to the official source here rather than walking through the steps myself — the AWS Builder Center page has everything you need, and the verification process is handled directly through their platform.

If your university has an AWS Student Builder Group — student-led cloud communities active across 60+ countries — that is also worth connecting with. Find one or start one at builder.aws.com/community/student-builder-groups.
The Bigger Picture
Cloud and AI literacy is becoming foundational across every engineering and technology discipline — not just software development. Programs like Student Rewards exist because AWS understands that the next generation of builders needs real access, not just awareness.
If you are a student, claim this. Use the Skill Builder access seriously. Build something on AWS. The on-ramp is right there.
